Alleged serial rapist trial to continue in the North West High Court

The  trial against a 25-year old man from Lehurutshe, near Zeerust in the North West, who is facing several charges of rape, will continue at the North West High Court in Mahikeng on Wednesday morning.

Tumisang Sesinyi of Matshelapata Section of Dinokana Village, allegedly terrorised women, especially students, from the nearby Lehurutshe College, by raping them at gun point.

The incidents are believed to have taken place between 2012 and 2015 at different bushy areas around Lehurutshe Magistrates’ Court and Lehurutshe Civic Centre.

Victims were robbed of their valuable belongs, such as cellphones and cash, before being repeatedly raped.

His arrest came after he was positively linked to the incidents by DNA tests results.

Meanwhile, the DNA backlog in the Forensics Division of the SAPS continues to grow, despite Police Minister Bheki Cele making a commitment to Parliament earlier this year that the matter is receiving urgent attention.

In August, the number of cases was standing at more than 300 000, according to information obtained by the DA.

In May this year, the party asked for an urgent debate on the matter.

During the debate, Cele said the backlog was due to poor contract management.

He said the number had stood at more than 200 000 cases.
